Understanding Different Forms of Trauma

Most people do not realize how pervasive and long-lasting trauma can be. In her work as a registered psychotherapist, Tara Lalonde has seen first-hand how unresolved trauma can severely impact a person’s life and relational functioning. Before you explore if trauma is impacting your own life, it’s important to understand definitions. In this first video, Tara explains what trauma actually is and offers examples of Complex, Single Incident, Big T and Little t Traumas.

After watching video 1, follow these steps to get the most out of this part of the series:

// Step 1

Read and meditate on this verse: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

// Step 2

Download and read through the PDF “Different Forms of Trauma” for clear definitions and examples of the four categories of trauma.

// Step 3

Ask yourself the following questions:

    1. Do any of Tara’s examples of different types of trauma sound familiar to you? If so, which ones?
    2. As Tara explains, Big T Traumas are obvious to us. But can you think of any instances in your own life, especially your childhood, of something that may have been a Little t Trauma? Remember: Just because someone else may not have experienced it as trauma does not mean it was not traumatizing to you.
    3. What are some mistaken beliefs you have about yourself, the world around you and even God?

// Step 4
